It’s a story of family, friendship, and a shared commitment to making wines that reflect the land and the people who care for it.

Lucie was born in 1927 in Husseren-Les-Châteaux and grew up working alongside her father in the vineyards, eventually making wine herself and selling much of it locally. She was also a great admirer of Gérard Schueller, Bruno’s father, whose independent approach to winemaking helped shape the philosophy behind the two families’ work. After Lucie died in 1991, the family’s grapes were sold to a cooperative for decades, and the wines that once carried her name disappeared from the cellar.

In 2018, Eric and his brothers decided to change that. They returned to the family’s vineyards and teamed up with Bruno, combining their own family history with the Schuellers’ experience making some of Alsace’s most individualistic natural wines. It’s a collaboration built on a longstanding friendship and a shared respect for the character of the region’s vineyards.

The Colombain family’s parcels sit close to the Schueller vineyards in Husseren-les-Châteaux, with some plots directly neighboring one another. Their holdings include calcareous sites planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Noir. The wines explore a range of expressions, from fresh, mineral-driven whites to more aromatic, skin-contact bottlings, each shaped by its grape varieties, vineyard, and vintage.

Eric works alongside Bruno in the cellar, where the wines ferment with native yeasts and are raised in old oak barrels. They are made without fining, filtration, or other additions, allowing the fruit and its origins to speak for themselves. It’s a thoughtful, hands-off approach rooted in the belief that the best wines come from healthy vineyards and a light touch in the cellar.

What makes the wines of Lucie Colombain special is the human story behind them. Eric and his brothers are restoring a piece of their family’s history, while Bruno brings years of experience and a close personal connection to the people and place involved. The result is not simply a return to winemaking, but a continuation of a family story carried forward through friendship, shared knowledge, and a deep respect for the land.
