La Maison Romane

In 2004, driven by an obsession with Pinot Noir and the wines of the Côte d'Or, Oronce de Beler left behind a career in advertising and settled in Vosne-Romanée—about as sacred a place as exists in the world of wine. Rather than jump straight into making wine, he immersed himself in every part of the craft. He studied viticulture in Beaune, apprenticed with family domaines throughout Burgundy, and even started a horse-plowing business, helping growers cultivate some of the region's most celebrated vineyards the old-fashioned way.

Those years built the relationships that would define La Maison Romane.

In 2005, Oronce purchased his first grapes from friends who shared his commitment to farming with respect for the land. From the very beginning, his philosophy has remained remarkably consistent: start with exceptional fruit, interfere as little as possible, and let each vineyard tell its own story. Every wine is fermented with whole clusters, native yeasts do the work, sulfur is used sparingly—if at all—and the wines are neither fined nor filtered.

In 2017, La Maison Romane moved from its original cellar in Vosne-Romanée to a larger vaulted cellar in nearby Nuits-Saint-Georges. The move allowed production to grow, but not at the expense of the philosophy. Oronce continues to work exclusively with growers who farm organically or biodynamically, with deep respect for healthy living soils. Every bunch is harvested by hand and carefully sorted before it ever reaches the cellar.

Patience defines the élevage just as much as restraint defines the vinification. The wines spend around a year resting in old Burgundian barrels—some inherited from neighboring domaines that have been making great wine for generations—before being bottled by hand, unfined, unfiltered, and sealed with La Maison Romane's signature wax capsule.

What makes these wines so memorable isn't power or polish. It's purity. Oronce has a remarkable ability to capture the quiet beauty of Burgundy without burying it beneath winemaking. His Pinots are fragrant, energetic, and deeply expressive, while his whites carry the same sense of precision and transparency.

La Maison Romane has become one of Burgundy's most beloved natural wine producers not because it chases trends, but because it never has. Every bottle reflects two decades spent pursuing a simple idea: if you begin with great vineyards, farmed by thoughtful people, the best thing a winemaker can do is get out of the way.
