WINE DETAILS

Les Sabots d’Hélène

For Alban Michel, talk is cheap. He refers to any attempt to wax poetic about wine or delve into silly somm speak about tasting notes as "blah, blah, blah." I really appreciate his whimsical, borderline cynical, view of the way most people approach speaking about wine while fully accepting the fact that as a wine seller it's my job to help folks look before they leap a bit when navigating their wine purchases. That said, spend five minutes on his website and you'll quickly realize his sense of humor is as much a part of the domaine as the vines themselves. He calls himself a pificulteur ("maker of pif"—French slang for wine), fills his labels with wordplay, and signs off with "Pif Not Dead." But behind the jokes is a grower with an unwavering commitment to farming and making honest wine.

Alban founded Les Sabots d'Hélène in 2005 in the tiny village of Feuilla, tucked into the wild, windswept landscape of the maritime Corbières. After gaining experience in the northern Rhône and Roussillon, he settled on a handful of isolated vineyard parcels surrounded by garrigue, where old Carignan, Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah thrive on limestone, clay, and schist soils. Some of the vines are more than a century old, naturally producing tiny yields packed with character.

The vineyards are farmed organically, but Alban's philosophy is refreshingly uncomplicated. Rather than chasing trends or marketing buzzwords, his focus is simply on growing healthy grapes with as little intervention as possible. Low yields, hand harvesting, and careful attention in the vineyard allow him to let the fruit do the talking.

In the cellar, that same restraint continues. Fermentations happen naturally, extractions are gentle, and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Sulfur is avoided, and nothing unnecessary finds its way into the bottle. The goal isn't to make "natural wine" for the sake of it—it's to make wine that tastes alive.

The result is a lineup of bottles that perfectly reflects both the rugged beauty of the Corbières and Alban's personality. They're full of vibrant fruit, Mediterranean herbs, earthy depth, and plenty of energy, but never feel heavy or overworked. These are wines made for the table, for friends, and for anyone who appreciates authenticity over polish.

Les Sabots d'Hélène proves that serious wine doesn't have to be serious. Beneath the playful labels and irreverent humor is a thoughtful grower making some of the most joyful, honest wines coming out of southern France today.
