Pierre Andrey
Based in Metz, in France’s northern Lorraine region, Pierre works on a tiny scale, sourcing organically farmed grapes from friends across France and transforming them into highly individual wines in the cellar beneath his home.
After working as a medical equipment consultant, Pierre gradually turned his passion for natural wine into a full-time pursuit. Rather than settling into a traditional domaine, he became a sort of traveling vigneron, driving his van from Lorraine to Alsace, Beaujolais, Jura, and beyond to collect grapes from growers he trusts. He brings the fruit back to Metz, where the winemaking happens in a converted garage just steps from his home.
Pierre also works a small parcel of vines near Metz, including Pinot Noir, giving him the chance to experiment with his own vineyards while continuing to explore what different regions and varieties can offer. His approach is relentlessly hands-off: organically farmed fruit, native fermentation, no chemical additions, and no sulfur. He’s less interested in imposing a style on the grapes than in seeing just how much character they can reveal on their own.
Pierre vinifies his wines individually in 50-liter glass demijohns—a decidedly unusual choice that has become something of a signature. Each demijohn develops its own personality, and because the wines are bottled individually, every tiny release is essentially its own micro-cuvée. Some bottlings amount to little more than 60 or 70 bottles, making them genuinely difficult to find and ensuring that no two releases are quite the same.
Pierre organizes his wines into several families, each exploring a different relationship between grape, place, and time. Verba Pampinea focuses on wines built for extended aging and evolution, while Vineae Florentes puts the spotlight on pure grape expression. Via Concordiae explores blends and combinations, and Cantio Familiae moves between varietal expression and the influence of terroir.
The wines themselves are remarkably fresh and energetic, with bright acidity, savory depth, and a tactile sense of purity. They can be intensely aromatic and layered without ever feeling heavy, often carrying a distinctly umami quality that makes them incredibly easy to drink.
There’s something wonderfully mysterious about Pierre Andrey’s wines. He has developed a method that he keeps close to the vest, allowing the tiny scale of the operation, the individual demijohns, and the character of each parcel to do much of the talking. The result is a collection of rare, deeply personal wines that feel less like products of a winery and more like small experiments in what grapes, time, and a little patience can become.
